True Crime Sundays: FBI ready to assist if needed on threats to elections offices

Emergency responders evacuated the Spokane County Elections office Wednesday, November 8th after an envelope containing a message and a white, powdery substance

SEATTLE, Wash – The FBI is working with law enforcement in eastern and western Washington, monitoring apparent threats made to multiple elections offices.

Suspicious powder was sent to elections offices in Spokane, Pierce and King Counties Wednesday, as elections workers were processing and counting ballots.

In Spokane County, the powder came in a standard envelope along with a note, but Spokane Police have not released what the note said. SPD said the powder was positive for fentanyl.

The FBI Public Affairs office in Seattle told 4 News Now it is monitoring the situation.

“The FBI is aware and in communication with our partners regarding these incidents,” the FBI said Wednesday. “We are poised to assist, if needed. We would like to stress the FBI takes all threats of violence seriously, including threats targeting those who do the critical work of administering free and fair elections throughout the U.S. We would also like to remind everyone to exercise care in handling mail, especially from unrecognized senders. If you see something suspicious, please contact law enforcement immediately.”

Tacoma Police said the substance in Pierce County was tested and determined to be baking soda.

The envelope there contained a message, but police said it was “not directed at anyone voting topic, political group, political candidate or ethnic group.”

Dispatch audio from the incident in Spokane County said the elections worker saw a note with big, bold lettering, but she immediately dropped it when she saw the white powder and did not read the note.

The Spokane County Elections office will remain closed Wednesday, so no more votes will be counted.

Elections workers plan to reopen Thursday and release another count Thursday afternoon.

Spokane County is also in contact with the Washington Secretary of State’s Office.
