Book Review Tuesday: American Predator by Maureen Callahan

by Dava Jean

This was an interesting book. I think I found myself relating to this because it happened partially in my back yard.
He grew up in Colville, Wa and then lived in Neah Bay for a long while much of this was going on.

His upbringing was strange and his parents started out as LDS, but then later changed to Amish. I believe that there were several in between, as well. They moved around frequently each time they adapted something new with religion.

There were a lot of children, and in the beginning they had a one room house and so the older children had to sleep outside in a tent. However during the summers, the mother did take them to California to have warmth.

Israel Keyes never really had any stability. He seems to want that, but really had no idea how to be a successful partner. His relationships failed over and over. At the same time, he wanted that control. He would go out and hunt victims. He would rape and murder them. They were mainly female, but there was some talk of him being bisexual and some male victims.

He was very smart as to how he did this, he knew to never leave DNA, but he got caught because he was using the debit card of some of the victims. He did not realize that that could be done. That is crazy that he thought an ATM card can’t be traced, but knew to not leave DNA.

He finally started coming clean and the body count started piling up. Due to his constant change of homes/states they notified law enforcement in those areas and more questions would arise. Israel did not want to answer them, thought. He wanted all of these demands. Suich as leave his family alone, and keep his name out of the press because he had a daughter. Yet, at the end they did not get everything they needed.

He was found dead in his cell, it was called self inflicted with a razor blade, but no one knows for sure.
