SPOKANE, Wash. — A 23-year-old Cusick man was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for fentanyl trafficking.
James Holmes pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. His 14-year sentence will run concurrently with a 151-month sentence for related conduct in Idaho. After his release, he will serve five years of supervised release and pay restitution.
According to court documents, Holmes and his co-defendant distributed fentanyl-laced pills in Eastern Washington and Idaho. In May and November of 2020, authorities contacted Holmes, where they found him with fentanyl-laced pills and firearms. In August, Holmes gave fentanyl to a 16-year-old from Sandpoint who died from a fentanyl overdose, which led to his 151-month sentence.
In November, Holmes and his co-defendant used fentanyl with a five-month-old baby. The baby overdosed, but survived.
Holmes also distributed fentanyl to a Newport, Washington man who died from a fentanyl overdose.
The DEA, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Police Department, Sandpoint Police Department and the Idaho State Police investigated the case.
