MOSCOW, Idaho – The quadruple murder trial of Bryan Kohberger will be moved out of Moscow after his defense team successfully argued that a fair trial could not take place in Latah County.
Judge John Judge allowed the change of venue motion after discussion from both the defense and prosecution.
The defense spent months arguing that a fair trial could not take place in the county where the deaths took place given the extensive media coverage of the murders. Change of venue hearings in the case were repeatedly moved back from an initial June date.
Now that Judge has ruled that the case will move out of Moscow, the prosecution will attempt to build a case that Kohberger stabbed University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin to death in November 2022, while the defense will attempt to show that Kohberger was not in the area at the time.
The continued impact of the murders can be seen in the physical geography of the University of Idaho’s campus, including a healing garden and enhanced security. A foundation honoring the memories of the murder victims has also been active throughout the Inland Northwest since the tragedy.
Judge didn’t determine a new venue in his order on Monday, instead deferring to the judgement of the Idaho Supreme Court.
