Opioid Crisis Fridays: True Stories from Missouri – Desi’ree Washington, 19

Died: March 8, 2023

Mother says she lost her ‘best friend that day’

Desi’Ree Washington was her mom’s “girly girl.” She loved purses and makeup, her signature fake eyelashes and helping others look good.

“She was my fashionista,” said her mother, Kelly Garner. “She always had my outfits picked out for me.”

On the day Desi’Ree died, she had sat in the bathroom with her mom that morning — like she always did — and talked to her as she was getting ready.

Typically, the 19-year-old had been going to work with her mom to shadow her in the medical office where she worked. But on this day, her nose was stuffy and she wasn’t feeling the best. So Desi’Ree figured she’d stay home and rest.

“She walked me and my daughter (Braylan, who was 6 at the time) out of the door that morning,” Garner said. “And she said ‘Braylan I hope you have a good day at school.’ And she looked at me and said, ‘I hope you have a good day at work.’”

When Garner got home at 4:30 that day, she found her oldest daughter lying in her bed and barely breathing.

“I started giving her CPR and the first officer that responded made me get off of her,” Garner said. An autopsy would later reveal that she died of fentanyl intoxication after taking a pill she got from a friend.

“Her friend left the pill in my mailbox for her,” Garner said, “which she stated was a prescription Xanax. And the pill obviously wasn’t. It killed her.”

Today, Garner has many questions about why officers didn’t perform CPR on her daughter, why it took EMS four minutes to get there and why they waited to give her daughter Narcan, which reverses the effects of fentanyl.

No one has been arrested or charged.

And in the months since her daughter’s March 8 death she’s become friends with hundreds of parents whose children died from fentanyl. Together, they want people to know what communities like Kansas City have lost because of the latest drug epidemic.

“Not only did I lose my daughter,” Garner said, “I lost my best friend that day.”
