Book Review Tuesday: Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey.

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I listened this via audiobook.

This was a fascinating story about lessons that the author learned throughout his life. He didn’t have the traditional upbringing of the privileged talent that we see coming through today. He had trails and tribulations.

He grew up in a dysfunctional family, with screaming parents. They had gotten divorced twice and remarried 3 times to each other. The parents would separate, but the kids were told the missing parent was on vacation to later find out that they were getting a divorce.

He goes through how he was going to go through law school, but then wanted to pursue acting. He was concerned that his family would not support the decision, as they always had thought he would be a lawyer and work for the family business.

He goes through stories of being an exchange student and what he learned from this. He goes through stories of dating, and how he met his wife. He goes through his acting career and how he got his first role, to becoming the romantic comedy guy to stepping aside from career to reset the stereotype so that he could get other roles. He was willing to walk away from Hollywood, if this didn’t come to fruition.

He moved his family to Texas because he loved it. His wife is so supportive and it is so positive to see a strong marriage in Hollywood.

This was book was fascinating. The title is Greenlight. This is when something good would happen, he called it a greenlight moment. This was a great listen, as it was read by the author and had his personality shining through. You could hear him get excited about topics, and less excited about others.

He spoke of the death of his father and how it really hurt him. It coincided with his first acting job. The timing is forever linked in his mind.

He speaks about roles that he played that spoke to him and why.

There was a lot of information packed into a 7 hour audiobook story. I recommend.
